Checking Business Name Availability
Every entrepreneur knows that in order to start a new business, you must first register the name of your business. Thinking of a name for your business should not be taken lightly since it is one of the things that can immediately identify what our business is.
You cannot register your business name if there is also a business name that is similar to yours, so in order to know if there is a similar business name as yours, you can check it in the ASIC Connect and use its ‘Check Name availability’. ASIC Connect is one of the methods to register your business name.Take note that if you are still not sure about your business name, you can reserve it to make it as a backup, but remember that you can only reserve it for two months, and if it reaches the deadline and you still haven’t registered your reserved business name, it will automatically be erased from the list of reservations of business names.
There are many methods on how to check if your business name is already taken or not.
One of it as mentioned is by using the ‘Check Name Availability‘ in the ASIC Connect. Using it is very simple, after clicking the Check Availability button, it will redirect you to its site, the first thing that you should do is to input the keywords then after importing it, click ‘Check Now’ button.
After clicking it, it will show any results that are related to the keyword that you entered. And if you think that you are not yet sure or you are still in doubt if your business name has a similar business name, then you can do it again by clicking the ‘New Search’ button and inputting another keyword. You can do business name availability tests, its purpose is to make a series of automated tests in order to determine if the business name is already registered or it has an identical business name that is connected to another entity. The Business Names Registration Act 2011 and Business Names Registration Determination 2015 helps in the business name availability test.
The Business Names Registration Act 2011 summarizes the details in which business name is still available to the given entity while the Business Names Registration Determination 2015 gives a set of rules in order to identify immediately whether the business name is still available or not. After doing the test, it will show you the results. If you do not know the color coding for the availability results, it would be hard for you to determine whether it is taken or not. The way how the results are shown from the Check Name Availability is different from the Business Name Availability Test.
The meaning of the colors:
Green – means your business name is still available.
Amber – means there is a possibility that your business name is not available because your business name is going through a transfer of ownership.
Red – there is no doubt that your business name is not available.
